its a little too soon to be certain, but i think... i think i just might have mouse free kitchen cabinets!

of course, that still leaves the laundry closet and office closet mouse holes to plug. so my house is not yet mouse free. but there's been a drastic reduction in mouse activity! and with no calls to the exterminator (or bringing home a fluffy, purring, little exterminator).

baka let me sleep in. then we played in the garden a little bit (i grow less & less fond of my 2 porch framing silk trees - their seedlings are *everywhere*). we had breakfast on the porch while i read my book and then i headed off to the eno river festival.

heard lots of good music, some "eh..." music and one i quite liked (bombadil). saw a good number of things i'd have liked to bring home from the festival (particularly a rocking chairs for my front porch), but left with only two brochures for local gutter installers and a hint of sunburn. there was a good breeze much of the afternoon making the eno's usual unbearable heat almost bearable.

came home, grilled some hot dogs and looked for local fireworks (graham wasn't having any. mebane was. burlington did theirs on the 3rd - wtf?) only to discover, thankfully before i drove to mebane, that mother nature was providing the show this year. a good show too, seems the worst of the storm went to the north and south of us so while we got some rain mostly it was just a pretty (& loud) lightning show.

Fireworks in Portland were awesome. We went over to JeffteyJeffs and walked around to one of the open bridges (no idea which one) and watched the fireworks display - we could see everything, even the guys working the show on the boat. The show was great, if a little mistimed between the 2 rigs - but hell, that's some hard stuff to do. One of the boats did get hit with a misfire but it didn't seem to cause any trouble for them and everyone seemed to be having a great time.

It's always so freaking friendly here, it's nice. People just hang out and are cool to one another generally - it's very different from Phoenix in that respect. Not that people in Phoenix aren't cool - the vibe is just different here. So Rose City + fireworks = AWESOME.

I figure I should ask the talents of yourselves this question.  I am making my boyfriend a Lover's Book for our 4 year anniversary, however I want to construct the book myself.  The only books I've ever made have been Japenese Stab Binding now I really want to make a book like this:

does anyone know what kind of book that is and a link to a tutorial?
or, couldyou tell me the materials i need and i'll makeshift it?
What do you use for hard covers?  Chip board?

I'm quite the novice when it comes to binding books. I have had the urge to make, draw in, and write books since I was very young. My life long dream is to make an exquisite hand bound book filled with beautiful art and hauntingly, achingly glorious words.....as of yet, my dream has been unfulfilled.

However, I do dabble in making my own little notebooks. I thought since I'm new here, I should share one of my attempts:

This is the design for the back of my notebook. The phrase in the heart is "Ben Wu loves you." Why? Well, I'm Ben Wu and I love everyone..even you, most of the time. ;)

My persuasion lecturer wanted us to decorate a file and persuade people to buy it. I used a normal file and paste a huge ass picture (of a tree), but looking around, everyone seemed to be buying files and decorate just like that and my friends were like, "Janis I thought you will do something creative!!" Of course, I do not want to disappoint people, so I made a file from scratch.....

friday is usually trash day here. people have their trash cans out by the road. but, um... holiday? surely there's no trash pick up on the 4th if july? even the library is closed (and we close for less than half of most holidays). still, i figured i'd roll mine out just in case, since others have. except when i pulled it out, it felt very light. opened the lid and peeked in - nope. nothing in it. still haven't filled the indoor 10 gallon kitchen trash can. this keeping baka's icky wrappers in her freezer till the trash is full thing definitely works. once this (already paid for) quarter is done, i'll be ditching the curbside pick up and saving some money.

in other news... i found the rechargable batteries for my camera! house photos to follow :)

My Abs are Pathetic! [Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

My personal trainer totally beat my ass into submission last night. I am not quite sore...yet but dear god, I can tell this weekend might suck a little. After I tottered into the door, Wicked Cool Riley remarked, "You look wrecked." And I was.

But man, did I sleep like a baby last night.

I managed another 465 words yesterday and I intended to write some more once I got home after the gym, but collapsing into bed seemed the more attractive option. Tonight The Inimitable Bex and I are having our writing date at Think Coffee before I head into New Jersey to spend the long weekend with Bear and I am determined to make some serious headway into the fifth chapter, if not finish it. And then I will have to figure out exactly what happens in the next act, but I won't worry about that now.

As per usual, it looks like rain this weekend. At least Bear and I can take our packing classs if we are weathered out down at the dropzone and now that we are no longer students, there isn't so much pressure on us to jump every chance we get as we can take as long as we'd like (as long as we stay current) to earn our A licenses. Still, I would like to get mine before summer's end so I can start flying with other people. It's rather lonely when you're skydiving all by your lonesome without anyone to interact with in freefall. A few of my friends at the dropzone have all point-blank told me that they're waiting for me to get my A so we can start formation diving, which sounds kind of exciting. Laticia is also running a wind tunnel camp that I would love to attend, but unfortunately it takes place during the week and all my other paid time off days are accounted for.

However...

TO ANYONE LIVING IN THE METROPOLITAN AREAS OF NEW YORK, PHILADELPHIA, AND WASHINGTON, D.C.

Next weekend is the weekend after my 23rd birthday and of course I will be down skydiving at Cross Keys. This is an open invitation for anyone to join me. You do not have to jump. You may come down and simply hang out with the awesome people there and drink once the sunset load has gone up. However, if you WOULD like to jump, I highly encourage it. Make a reservation at Freefall Adventures for Saturday, July 12th. Bear can drive three people in his car for those who are coming from New York City. The dropzone is only 15 minutes away from Center City, Philadelphia in Williamstown, New Jersey, so I gather it will probably be about an hour and a half drive for those coming from DC.

I would love to see whoever I can! Email me at thegreatmissjj@gmail.com if you have any questions.

And now work. Although it's rather slow in the office today...

Last night, Sex Bob-Omb played their inaugural set at Jerod's house, and it was awesome. So far we only have Scott and Kim Pine, but they look pretty accurate, and we spent an hour making a really awesome yellow and orange Zero shirt for Scott. I still need to make a band logo for the drumhead - I wonder if I can download a picture of a bob-omb from anywhere. So yeah. We are huge nerds.

And speaking of Zero, Jerod finally downloaded it, and I totally pwned it on the first try. Rock.

and I am awake.

Probably my first decent sleep since last week or even before - I crashed about 10pm and woke up at 9am. Didn't rip off my headgear, I actually breathed and slept at the same time. \o/

Going to a job fair today with a friend from work for a couple hours to see what is what as well. I feel better today than I have in a while. I got some dishes washed and put away, the bed made - things are at least not a hazard.

Early In the Morning [Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

[ music | Good Morning - Babes in Arms ]

Alas, I accomplished minimal writing on my novel last night. I'm a little frustrated because when I had been writing the scene before, I was in "the groove" as one might say; the rhythm of the action and the flow of emotions smoothly wrote themselves and I was the conduit for my story. Unfortunately as that groove took place on a train ride back from Philadelphia to New York City, I was interrupted as we pulled into NY Penn Station and I could not for the life of me get back into it last night. As a result the words sort of puttered their way onto the page instead of chugging along steadily.

I want to finish my book. It seems so self-evident, yet I want to finish my novel so I can read it. Although I, like every other aspiring author, would love to see my book in print, what it comes down to is I'm writing this story for me. I'm writing because this is the book I've always wanted to read, from the age of the protagonists to their concerns, their woes, their potential romances and their adventures to the setting and the prose style, etc. I like this book. A lot. So I just want it all written already so I can read it without having to bother with things like plot logistics.

Although my family would protest otherwise, I think I'm a morning person. In my wanton youth I was wont to staying up at ungodly hours of the night and lying abed until noon, but now that I've settled into a "working schedule," I find that I love mornings best. I am the most productive, creatively and otherwise, between the hours of 7am and 10am, after which I find myself unable to focus as clearly and with as much intent as the within the first few hours after I wake up.

Pfagh.

On a completely different note: "It's going to harder for me to not eat cheese than to stop drinking." Oh Carl, you truly are a man after my own heart. I less than three you to bits.

oh how i love freecycle! i'll never need to have another yard sale again :)

yes, i usually earn about $200 at a yard sale but there's that whole getting up at the crack of doom dawn thing. and then spending half my day waiting for the caffeine to kick in while people rifle through my stuff. besides, the things i've picked up from freecycle this year easily match that theoretically lost income.

yup, definitely love freecycle. i post something, i put it outside, it goes away. minimal fuss and all handled well after 5am.

Buttfacemakani is made of win, not only because she is an awesome artist, but because she also probably hates Twilight as much as I do. This reminds me of when Katranna once pointed out the textual awfulness of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. The internet is smart!

Last night Bear, White-Harp, Kim, and I went to see WALL·E and it may have been the best movie ever.

Review of Pixar's WALL-E. SPOILERS BELOW. )

Go see this! Everyone, go! It may be the first movie in a long time for which I felt absolutely justified in spending $12!
